Can a Speech Therapist Help with My Child’s Literacy?

Your child can only improve their reading and writing skills with the right building blocks. With a speech therapist, your child will build these foundations, learn to use words better both in speech and writing, and improve their overall learning experience for life.

Is your child struggling to read?

Children that struggle with reading tend to feel shy when asked to read aloud, but sometimes the issues don’t stop there.

As a parent, you may also notice more troubling signs when your child…

can’t recognize letters on a page

leaves out some words when they build sentences

struggles to identify and make rhymes

has a hard time blending sounds together or breaking them up, or

asks to repeat information frequently

These concerns are part of the bigger picture: Literacy.

A literacy-based approach with Apheleia Online Speech Therapy can help your child pick up the essential skills they will use in the classroom and for their lifetime.

Literacy-Based Therapy: More than Just Reading and Writing

Building a strong literacy foundation will your help child’s learning abilities for all subjects, even before they step into the classroom.

A complete approach in literacy covers more skills than reading and writing. It includes crucial speech and language skills that help them:

understand more from every class lesson and activity

write legibly and spell words correctly

be more interested in reading for school and for leisure

improve school performance and motivation to learn

have more confidence when speaking in class and with peers

Literacy is a fundamental life skill starting from your child’s early years until adulthood. Speech therapy can help build these skills more effectively.

Speech-Language Therapy for Literacy

How Speech Therapy for Literacy Works

Therapy starts with our SLP’s initial assessment that identifies your child’s specific gaps in language and literacy. This assessment will also determines if they are showing signs of speech and language disorders (such as dyslexia).

After the assessment, your speech-language pathologist (SLP) will help by:

providing the next steps to prevent further literacy challenges

giving practical exercises and activities for improvement

teaching parents and caregivers on how to help them at home

tracking your child’s progress and adjusting to more appropriate activities

The sooner we start together, the sooner you’ll see them excited to read, eager to write and feel confident when attending school.
